Since the library closed on March 15, we have been awaiting the day we could begin to offer library services to customers once again. The library reopening Team has been hard at work developing a plan for a phased reopening of the library. Throughout the planning we have used local, state and national guidelines to provide direction on safe practices. Staff and customer safety has remained our top priority. During the closure of our physical buildings, we continued to offer many services and we are pleased to announce that soon the library collection will once again be available.
Beginning May 18, you will be able to place holds in the library catalog. Starting May 26, you will be able to pick up your holds at either the Indian Creek Library at 16100 W. 135th St. or the new Temporary Olathe Library at 1078A W. Santa Fe.
Curbside hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
Here are the library services available to you in the library’s Phase I reopening:
We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
How do I place holds?
You will be able to place holds in the library catalog starting on May 18. Find an item in the catalog and click the “place hold” button. You may hold up to 30 items at a time. Wait for the email notice that your hold is ready for pick up. Items will be held for 10 days.
How do I pick up my holds?
When you receive the notice that your hold is available, drive to the library and follow the signs indicated for curbside pick up. Once parked, text the library using the number indicated on the parking spot sign. Please remain in your car and await further instructions from library staff. Please open your trunk or roll down your window for a no-contact delivery.
How do I change the pickup location of a hold?
For any holds currently on your account but not yet filled, navigate to the list of holds and next to the title, drop down the “Pick up at” menu and choose the new location. To change your default pick up location, go to My Account-My Settings-Account Preferences and choose a new preferred pick up location.
For any holds that are currently available for pick up, beginning May 18, you will be able to contact the library online to choose a new pick up location.
How can I find items online to check out?
Use the “We Recommend” tab to find a list of Bestsellers and new titles in addition to our librarian recommended resources. If you still need ideas, try our Personalized Reading List to have a librarian make a list of suggestions for you.

How do I return items?
The Olathe library book return locations continue to be open for return of library materials. Please use one of these locations as staff will not accept returns curbside.
Can I return items while picking up items curbside?
No. We ask that you return items in the book returns. Staff will not be accepting returns or donations curbside.
The materials I returned are still showing on my account.
Returned items will be quarantined for several days before being checked into our system. If an item is still on your account after 10 days, please contact the library online.
Can I pay my fines curbside?
No, staff will not be able to process fines via curbside service. Fines may be paid online at olathelibrarysmartpay.org. If you have questions about fines on your account, you may contact the library online.
Who do I contact with questions about my account?
Please submit your question online to our library staff.
How will the books be sanitized?
There is no reliable, comprehensive way to sanitize library materials. Current research suggests the COVID-19 virus lives in diminishing capacity on various surfaces over time. It is always a good practice to wash hands thoroughly after handling library materials.
