National Library Week Library Contest: Find Your Place at the Library

Calling all writers and library lovers – help us celebrate National Library Week in your own words!

Did a librarian put a book in your hands at just the right time? Has a library ever made you feel at home or that you were right where you were supposed to be? In 650 words or less, tell us how you’ve found your “place” at the library. 


1st Place – trophy, OPL tote bag, Amazon gift card of $25
2nd Place – trophy, OPL tote bag, Amazon gift card of $15
3rd Place – trophy, OPL tote bag

Contest Guidelines:

  • Writers must 16 years old or older
  • Writers must be residents of the Kansas City Metro Area
  • Entries must be 650 words or less
  • Entries must be in English and previously unpublished
  • Entries must be typewritten in 12 black ink on white paper and double-spaced
  • Entries must have a cover page with the following:
    • Title of work
    • Author’s legal name
    • Address
    • Phone number
    • Email address
    • Approximate word count
    • Do not include identifying information on your submission anywhere besides the cover page – this allows for fair evaluation of each submission  
  • One entry per person
  • 3 winners – first, second, and third place - will be selected by a panel of Olathe Public Library staff
  • Winners must be available for a reading online on Sunday 4/26 at 3:30 pm using the Zoom app
  • Johnson County Library and Olathe Library staff are ineligible
  • We reserve the right not to present an award

How to Submit Your Entry:

  1. Entries will be accepted from April 1 – April 15. Winners will be announced on April 22. Winners’ reception will be on April 26.
