This year's event will feature Kansas notable author Thomas Fox AverillMr. Averill was the speaker for the first foundation dinner in 2003 after writing his book, Secrets of the Tsil Café. Now, he is now back to discuss his latest book, Found Documents from the Life of Nell Johnson Doerr, (University of New Mexico Press, 2018) which was published earlier this year. The novel is told entirely through journals, letters, photos, drawings, notes and clippings left behind by the fictional character, Nell, a resident of Lawrence, Kansas, during the Civil War. Nell’s story goes beyond the abolitionist movement and Quantrill’s Raid, when she finds fossils in her basement’s foundation. Bucking against gender conventions, Nell contributes to the scientific record of her time. Averill thoroughly researched the history of early Lawrence, the University and the state of Kansas, to create this highly authentic novel.

Mr. Averill is a Professor Emeritus of English at Washburn University in Topeka where he has taught courses in Creative Writing and in Kansas Literature, Folklore and Film. He has published two story collections, two works of nonfiction, and five novels.

In celebration of the new Indian Creek library construction, Gould Evans architect Sean Zaudke will give a special presentation on the new library.
