How to Get and Use a Library Card

Get a Library Card

Library cards are free and available to everyone. Fill out an application and bring it to either Olathe location with an ID and address verification. If you are under 16, you will need a parent or guardian to get a card. 

Library cards can be used at both Olathe Library locations and Johnson County Library locations.

Lost or Stolen Card?

Please tell us immediately if your card is lost or stolen so we can prevent others from accessing your account. You are responsible for charges until the library is notified of the lost or stolen card.

Replacement cards cost $2.

Your PIN/Password

Your card comes with a PIN/password. It allows access to many library services including online learning, databases, and your online account.

Renew

All items except for Hot Picks, Limited Loans, Discovery Passes and magazines can be renewed if no one else is waiting for the item. Items can be renewed up to 10 times each.

You can renew through your online account, by phone or in person.

Place Holds

If an item is already checked out or on the shelves at another library location, you can place a hold and have it sent to the library of your choice. We will notify you by phone or email when your hold becomes available. From that point, you have 7 days to pick up the item.

Can't Find What You're Looking For? 

We can borrow items from libraries all over the country through our Interlibrary Loan Service(ILL). If there is an item you think we should add to the Olathe Public Library collection, suggest it for purchase.

Returns

Materials can be returned to Olathe Public Library locations or Johnson County Library locations regardless of where you checked them out.

Fines

Fines are 30 cents per day/per item, with a maximum of $6 per item, except where noted on the item. Pay your fines online, by phone or in person.

Accounts with a balance between $15 and $24.99 with fees outstanding for more than 30 days will be placed in our Small Balance program. Small Balance Accounts are subject to a non-refundable $3 fee and users will be unable to renew, place holds, or check out materials without staff assistance until the balance is paid in full.

Accounts with a balance of $25 or more, must be paid below $25 to check out, place holds or renew materials. Your account may be placed in our Materials Recovery Service (MRS) program if any fee is outstanding for more than 30 days. Such accounts will be subject to a non-refundable $10 fee. MRS accounts must be paid in full before privileges are reinstated.
