Movies Based on Children's Books

Hollywood continues to draw upon the treasure trove of children’s literature to inspire new feature films. Book-inspired films currently playing at a theater near you include A Wrinkle in Time and Peter Rabbit, and there are more “children’s book” movies coming your way in the year ahead.

The War with Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith
The movie version will star Robert De Niro as the grandpa.

The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
This classic has inspired numerous films in the past. The newest version entitled Mowgli will feature such talents as Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch and will be directed by Andy Serkis (of Gollum fame).

Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
Based on the popular book series, the new movie Mary Poppins Returns will be a sequel to the original film and features Emily Blunt as the well-loved nanny.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs
This spooky mystery is being made into a movie featuring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Yes, yet another version of this classic book is making its way to the silver screen—this one a modern retelling starring Lea Thompson.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
This holiday classic is getting a new remake starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the cantankerous Grinch.

Once the movies hit the theaters, these books often become very popular. For instance, A Wrinkle in Time was published fifty-six years ago, but since the new movie was recently released, there are now over 165 people on the book’s waiting list. Now is the time to read these books before their movies come out. And as many people will tell you, the book is almost always better than the movie! At least that is the opinion of your average librarian.
