Fall Storytimes

PLEASE NOTE that we have made some changes to our storytime schedule this season.  We thank everyone who filled out our storytime survey this summer; we have incorporated as much of your feedback as possible.  One of the biggest changes is registration is no longer required for any of our storytimes, but space may be limited.  For some storytimes tickets will be handed out 15 minutes before the program begins.  We have also reorganized the various age groups a bit.  We encourage you to determine which storytime session is most appropriate for your child and family.  And we will be offering a Saturday storytime at the Main Library once a month during the fall session.  Click the links below for more information about the different sessions.

RHYME TIME - For 0 -2 year olds + adult

Don your pajamas and come to the library for bedtime stories.  Stories will be geared toward ages 3 - 5, but all ages are welcome.  Program will last about 30 minutes.  No registration.

RAISING A READER - 6 BY 6 LITERACY SKILLS - For ages 5 & younger with adult

Ready, set, grow a reader! Bring your young children to our meeting room to help grow their pre-reading skills as you interact together with educational toys and books. No registration. Come and go as you please.

BRICK-TIONARY - For K - 5th graders

What is Brick-tionary? Think Pictionary but with LEGO building instead of drawing. Bring your best brick-building skills and guessing abilities for a fun time. Program will last about an hour.

HOMESCHOOL ART SHOW DROP-OFF - For ages 6 - 18 (grades 1st - 12th)

Homeschool artists: Show us your bestenter your creative masterpiece in OPL's 2nd Annual Homeschool Art Show! Homeschoolers ages 6 to 18 (grades 1st - 12th) are invited to submit one piece of 2-D art to display at the Main Library and to attend our public "Meet the Artists" reception with your friends and family on November 11. Drop off artwork and completed Artist Information Form at the Main Library Children's Desk between October 18 - 26.

READ TO A DOG - For young readers of all ages

Saturday, October 18
1:30 - 2:30 p.m. at the Main Library

Children of all ages may drop by the library and read to a cuddly canine between 1:30 and 2:30 on the dates listed above. Come to the Children's Desk upon arrival and check in for a reading time. Reading sessions are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No advanced registration necessary. For more information, call (913) 971-6874. PUZZLERS' DELIGHT - For 1st - 5th graders

No school—what to do? How about a mystery and a puzzle at the library? Team up to complete a jigsaw puzzle or try your hand at PhotoPlay (completing a captioned photograph with your illustration). The story will be suitably haunting—Halloween is around the corner. Program will last about an hour.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS - For all ages

Monday, October 20
6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Branch

Come play chess with a worthy opponent at our Family Chess Nights. Boards and equipment will be provided. All ages and playing levels welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration.

HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM:  GET CREATIVE - For ages 6 - 11 (grades 1st - 5th)

Learn about the artist Dale Chihuly and then create an art piece based on his work to take home. Program will last about 90 minutes.

EVENING LEGO CLUB - For K - 5th graders

Are you a kid in kindergarten through 5th grade who loves building with LEGO bricks? Be a part of our monthly Evening LEGO Club! Each month we'll introduce a different theme, turn you loose on the library's LEGO collection to build something awesome, then let you show off your creation before you leave. Program will last about an hour.
PARENTS: To allow as many children as possible to experience LEGO Club, please sign your child up for ONLY one LEGO Club meeting per calendar month.

PRESCHOOL DANCE PARTY - For ages 5 & younger + adult

Drop by the Storytime Room and have some fun with our DUPLO collection! DUPLO bricks will be made available after our 10:15 Saturday Storytime ends. Parents must remain with their children. No registration.

VICTOR & PENNY PLAY ANTIQUE POP - For all ages

Join us for a musical afternoon with Kansas City's own Victor & Penny.  Victor (Jeff Freling, guitar) and Penny (Erin McGrane, ukulele) play "Antique Pop," 1920s jazz tunes and original compositions. Program will last about an hour.  For more information, visit victoryandpenny.com.

LET'S CELEBRATE THE DAY OF THE DEAD - For 5th grade & younger + adult

Come celebrate the Day of the Dead. Children in 5th grade and younger, along with parents, can drop by and decorate a traditional sugar skull. Come and go as you please. No registration but supplies are limited.
