Our summer theme for 2013 is Dig Into Reading!  We will be exploring the wonders of the world beneath our feet.  Below is a list of activities we have planned for this summer.

SUMMER READING FOLDERS

  • First day to pick up folder:  Wednesday, May 22 at the Main Library & Indian Creek Branch
  • Return folders between July 29 - August 11

All readers, 5th grade and younger, are encouraged to pick up a summer reading folder at either library beginning
May 22.  Use the folder to record all of your summer reading.  You may keep track of your reading either by writing down the titles of all the books you read or by keeping track of the number of days you spend time reading.  Just for fun you may also collect colorful stickers on the back of your folder each week throughout the summer.  Bring your folder back between July 29 - August 11 and receive a free paperback book.  Folders will be distributed throughout the summer at both libraries and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 28 at Frontier Park.

Come join the fun at our Summer Reading Kick-Off!  You can pick up your summer reading folder and enjoy games, crafts, chess, temporary tattoos, and more.  Everyone is invited.  Reading folders will also be available at both libraries.

Frontier Park is located at Black Bob Road and Indian Creek Parkway, just southwest of the Indian Creek Branch Library.  In case of rain Kick-Off will be canceled.

Discover prehistoric cave art deep inside the earth, and then make your very own cave art masterpiece.

CHILD & PARENT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP  •  For 3rd & 4th graders + an adult  •  Registration required

Come to the library and enjoy an evening of stories, finger plays, and songs.  The stories will be geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.  No registration required.  Storytime will last about 30 minutes.  NOTE:  This program will feature the same stories used at Storytime in the Park.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS  •  For all ages  •  No registration

    Family Chess Nights will be held at the library on the following dates:

FIND FIDO FRIDAYS  •  For all ages  •  No registration

  • Fridays, May 31 - August 9, All day at the Main Library & Indian Creek Branch

Oh no!  That pesky dog Fido is lost again in the Children's Department.  Stop by the Main Library or Indian Creek Branch any Friday between May 31 and August 9 and hunt for Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children's Department.  If you can find him and tell us where he is, you will get a small prize!

Join us for free family movies at the library this summer.  Tha same movie will be shown at both the Main Library and Indian Creek Branch on Mondays at 1:30 p.m.  Bring a pillow and enjoy a good movie.  No registration is necessary, but space is limited.  Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis starting 30 minutes before each show.  The whole family is welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

What wears a pointy, red hat, loves to dig for treasure, and lives in your garden?  A gnome, of course!  Hear a story about these legendary creatures, play Gnome Bingo, and create a mini-habitat for your very own gnome.

HAMSTER BALL RACES  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Enter your pet hamster in the races!  Bring your pet in a plastic hamster ball, and let's see who has the fastest hamster in town!  All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Spectators welcome as space allows.

KANSAS ROCK HOUNDS  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Ever wonder about the rocks you see around you?  How do geologists and rock lovers identify different rocks?  Come learn about Kansas rocks – and bring in your own rock sample for identification!

LEGO LOCK-IN  •  For 1st - 5th graders  + Parents •  Registration required

What will you build?  Parents and children are invited to relax and spend time building together during this after-hours program.  The library will provide the LEGO bricks, and you may build whatever you want.  All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Program will last an hour and a half.

MAD SCIENCE PRESENTS "DO YOU DIG SCIENCE?"  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

Dig into Reading with the Mad Scientist as he investigates what is under the surface of the earth.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.

PAUL MESNER PUPPETS PRESENT "THE DINOSAUR SHOW"  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

No bones about it – "The Dinosaur Show" will tickle your funny-fossil and stimulate your imagination with an entertaining and educational look at dinosaurs.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome. Budding gardeners can plant some seeds, decorate a "pot," then watch it grow!  Due to small parts, parental assistance is required.  For 5 year olds and younger with accompanying adult.  No registration required.  Come and go as you please.

R.E.A.D. TO A DOG  •  For young readers of all ages  •  No registration

Children of all ages may drop by and read to a cuddly canine at the library between 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. on the dates listed above.  Upon arrival check in at Chldren's Services for a reading time.  No registration necessary, but reading sessions will be limited and available on a first come, first served basis.  This is a fun way to keep up your reading skills over the summer.  Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc.

STORYTIME IN THE PARK  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

  • Tuesdays, June 4 - July 23, 10:00 a.m. at Frontier Park (Black Bob Rd. & Indian Creek Pkwy.)
  • Thursdays, June 6 - July 25, 10:00 a.m. at Mill Creek Park (Woodland & Poplar)

Bring a blanket and enjoy 30 minutes of stories, songs, and finger plays.  Stories are geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but all are welcome.  No registration required.  In case of rain, storyime will be canceled.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST  •  For 1st - 5th graders

  • Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Tuesday, May 28
  • Entry deadline is Sunday, June 30
  • Winners announced Monday, July 15
  • Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 29

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer.  For more information, pick up an entry form at either library or download it here.
