Our summer theme for 2016 is On Your Mark, Get Set...READ!  We will be offering a variety of fun and
educational programs for kids going into 5th grade and younger related to sports, fitness, games, and more.  
Below is a list of activities we have planned for this summer.

SUMMER READING LOGS

  • First day to pick up a reading log:  Monday, May 16 at the Olathe Downtown Library
  • Return reading logs between August 1 - 19

All readers, going into 5th grade and younger, are encouraged to pick up a summer reading log at the Olathe Downtown Library beginning Monday, May 16 or anytime thereafter.  Use the log to record all of your summer reading.  Bring your reading log back between August 1 - 19 and receive a free paperback book.  Reading logs will be distributed throughout the summer at the Olathe Downtown Library and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 31 at Frontier Park.

Summer starts off with a bang at our Summer Reading Kick-Off.  Pick up a summer reading log and enjoy a variety of free fun activities.  Everyone is invited to join in the fun.  Olathe Noon Optimists will provide free water.  Reading logs will also be available at the Olathe Downtown Library.

Frontier Park is located at Black Bob Road and Indian Creek Parkway, just southwest of the Indian Creek Library.  In case of rain Kick-Off will be cancelled.

BAG OF LEGO CHALLENGE  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Saturday, June 18, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Olathe Downtown Library

Everything is awesome when you build with LEGO bricks.  We'll lend you a bag of random LEGO bricks, and you use your imagination to build something cool with just those pieces.  No swapping or trading with others!  That's part of the challenge and the fun.  Come on go as you please.

CHILD & PARENT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP  •  For 3rd - 5th graders + an adult  •  Registration required

This is a book discussion group where children and adults read books together.  Both child and adult should read the book and come prepared to discuss it.  Copies of the book will be provided and must be picked up at the Downtown Library.  One book per child will be provided.  Program will last about an hour.

CHILD & PARENT LEGO® LOCK-IN  •  For 1st - 5th graders + parents •  Registration required

  • Friday, July 29, 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Library
    Registration begins Friday, July 22

Build it and race it!  Join us for an evening of creating vehicles with LEGO bricks and testing them out.  The library will provide the LEGO bricks for children in 1st - 5th grade and thei grown-ups to build with together!  Program will last about 90 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to choking hazards and space limitations, younger or older siblings may not attend.  Please arrive at the library by 7:00 p.m. in order to be admitted to the program.  Once inside, participants may not leave and re-enter.  Registration for this program will be available only by phone or in person at the library.  Online registration not available.

CHINESE DRUM - PRESCHOOL CRAFT  •  For Preschoolers + an adult  •  No registration

  • Monday, July 13, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. at the Downtown Library

Come make and decorate a Chinese rattle drum.  No registration.  Come and go as you please.  Program is for preschoolers with a responsible adult.

EVENING STORYTIME AT THE LIBRARY  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

  • Tuesdays, June 7 - July 26, 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Library

Come to the library and enjoy an evening of stories, fingerplays, and songs.  The stories will be geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.  No registration required.  Storytime will last about 30 minutes.  NOTE:  This program will feature the same stories used at Storytime in the Park.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS  •  For all ages  •  No registration

Family Chess Nights will be held at the library on the following dates:

Oh no!  That pesky dog Fido is lost again in the Children's Department.  Stop by the Downtown Library any Friday between June 3 and August 5 and track down Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children's Department.  If you can find him and tell us where he is, you will get a small prize!

Join us for free family movies at the library this summer.  All movies will be shown at the Downtown Library.  The same movie will be shown twice each week:  on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.  Bring a pillow and enjoy a good movie.  No registration is necessary, but space is limited.  Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis starting 30 minutes before each show.  The whole family is welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Get ready to party!  Join Rapping Roy and Reggie Regg the Magic Man in this action packed show that will include music, magic, dance, and more.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about an hour.

NURSERY RHYME OLYMPICS  •  For Preschoolers + an adult  •  No registration

Can you put Humpty Dumpty back together again?  Are you able to help Little Bo Peep round up her sheep?  Do you think you have what it takes to fetch a pail of water?  Well, then one, two, buckle your shoe and come to the library to compete in the Nursery Rhyme Olympics!  No registration required.  Come and go as you please.  Program is for preschoolers with a responsible adult.

On your mark, get set, sleep!  Did you know a good night's rest is important for both physical and mental health?  Join us to create a unique pillowcase and sleep mask that are sure to get you snoozing.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST  •  For 1st - 5th graders

  • Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Monday, May 16
  • Entry deadline is Monday, June 27
  • Winners announced Monday, July 11
  • Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 25

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at the Downtown Library at the end of the summer.  Beginning May 16 entry forms will be available at the Downtown Library and also available for download on our website..

Join certified yoga instructor Jessica Sexton for an introduction to the basics of yoga—just for kids.  Learn breathing techniques, basic poses, relaxation skills, and more.  No equipment needed.  Wear comfortable clothing.  Program will last about an hour.
