Our summer theme for 2017 is Build a Better World.  We will be offering a variety of fun and educational programs for
kids going into 5th grade and younger related to building, designing, creating, and making the world a better place.  

Below is a list of activities we have planned for this summer.

SUMMER READING LOGS

  • First day to pick up a reading log:  Monday, May 22 at Downtown Library & Indian Creek Library
  • Return reading logs between July 31 - August 18

All readers, going into 5th grade and younger, are encouraged to pick up a summer reading log at the Downtown Library or Indian Creek Library beginning Monday, May 22 or anytime thereafter.  Use the log to record all of your summer reading. Bring your reading log back between July 31 - August 18 and receive a free paperback book.  Reading logs will be distributed throughout the summer at both Olathe libraries and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 30 at Frontier Park.

Summer starts off with a bang at our Summer Reading Kick-Off.  Pick up a summer reading log and enjoy a variety of free fun activities.  Everyone is invited to join in the fun.  Olathe Noon Optimists will provide free water.  Reading logs will also be available at both Olathe libraries.

Frontier Park is located at Black Bob Road and Indian Creek Parkway.  In case of rain, Kick-Off will be cancelled.

AWESOME BIRDS  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Wednesday, June 14, 2:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Community Church  (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.)

Meet a curly-crested toucan and a green parrot. Marvel at a cockatoo who does tricks and Mr. Bo Jangles who will dance. Experience Swoop the owl as he flies overhead. The birds from Wings of Love will surprise and delight.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  PLEASE NOTE: This program is NOT recommended for children under age 6.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:45 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

BUILD A BETTER WORLD WITH AARON FOWLER  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Wednesday, July 12, 2:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Community Church  (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.)

Experience the power of building a better world through music and stories with musician Aaron Fowler.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:45 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

CAN A BOOK AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR BUILD A WORLD?  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Wednesday, June 28, 2:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Community Church  (12480 S. Black Bob Rd.)

Come meet Daniel Miyares and find out!  Mr. Miyares is both author and illustrator of such books as FloatPardon Me!, and Bring Me a Rock!  Learn how his ideas become illustrations and stories and see him in action.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:45 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about an hour.

CHILD & PARENT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP  •  For 3rd - 5th graders + an adult  •  Registration required

This is a book discussion group where children and adults read books together.  Both child and adult should read the book and come prepared to discuss it.  Copies of the book will be provided and may be picked up at the Downtown Library.  One book per child will be provided.  Program will last about an hour.

CONSTRUCTION ZONE  •  For preschoolers + an adult  •  No registration

  • Friday, July 14, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon at the Downtown Library
  • Friday, July 21, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library

Does your child know the difference between an excavator and a front loader?  Do they build towers in their sleep?  Have they ever tried to borrow grandma's hammer?  Drop on in to the construction zone where they can pin the tire on the machine, create their own tool belt, and so much more!  No registration required.  Come and go as you please.  Program is for preschoolers with a responsible adult.

EVENING STORYTIME AT THE LIBRARY  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

  • Tuesdays, June 6 - July 25, 7:00 p.m. at the Downtown Library

Come to the library and enjoy an evening of stories, fingerplays, and songs.  The stories will be geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.  No registration required.  Storytime will last about 30 minutes.  This program will feature the same stories used at Storytime in the Park.  NOTE:  There will be no storytime on July 4th.

FAIRY TALE STEAM  •  For preschoolers + an adult  •  No registration

  • Friday, June 16, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon at the Downtown Library
  • Friday, June 23, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library

Preschoolers and the grown-ups that bring them will use STEAM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) to help their favorite fairy tale characters.  Drop in to problem solve, create, and discover alongside the 3 Little Pigs, Jack, the gingerbread man, some princesses, and a fairy or two!  No registration.  Come and go as you please. Program is for preschoolers with a responsible adult.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHT  •  For all ages  •  No registration

Family Chess Nights will be held at the library on the following dates:

FIND FIDO FRIDAY  •  For all ages  •  No registration

  • Fridays, June 2 - August 4, All day at the Downtown Library & Indian Creek Library

Oh no!  That pesky dog Fido is lost again in the Children's Department.  Stop by the Downtown Library or Indian Creek Library any Friday between June 2 and August 4 and track down Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children's Department.  If you can find him and tell us where he is, you will get a small prize!

FISH TALES  •  For preschoolers & their families  •  No registration

  • Friday, June 23, 10:00 a.m. at Black Bob Bay  (14570 W. 151st St.)

Come to Black Bob Bay for a free 30 minute preschool storytime.  Meet outside the pool entrance for a morning of stories, songs, and play from the Olathe Public LIbrary and the Olathe Community Center.  No registration required for the storytime.  For a small fee you can stay for a special Me & Mini Swim.  In case of rain, storyime will be cancelled.

Join us for free family movies at the library this summer.  Bring a pillow and enjoy a good movie.  Each week the featured movie will be shown at both libraries on the same date and time.  No registration is necessary, but space is limited.  Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis starting 30 minutes before each show.  The whole family is welcome.  Kindergarten and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Looking for a fun activity for the whole family?  Come play games at the library!  The library will provide an assortment of games for your enjoyment.  All ages welcome.  Kindergarten and younger must be accompanied by an adult.  Come on go as you please.

LEGO® LOCK-IN  •  For 1st - 5th graders + parents •  Registration required

What will you build?  The library will provide LEGO bricks for children in 1st - 5th grade and their grown-ups to build together.  Bring your imaginaton and build freely or participate in a building challenge!  Program will last about 90 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to choking hazards and space limitations, younger or older siblings may not attend.  Please arrive at the library by 7:00 p.m. in order to be admitted to the program.  Once inside, participants may not leave and
re-enter.  Registration for this program will only be available by phone or in person at the library.  Online registration not available.

MAKE A MONSTER, SHAPE A STORY  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Roll the dice and draw a monster!  Roll the cubes and create a story!  Bring your imagination along for creativity and fun.  Program will last about an hour.

READ TO A DOG  •  For young readers of all ages  •  No registration

Young readers may drop by the Indian Creek Library and read to a cuddly canine during the times listed above.  Upon arrival, check in at Children's Services for a reading time.  Reading sessions will be limited and available on a first-come, first-servied basis.  Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc.

RECYCLED CRAFTS  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Trash into treasure!  Join us as we turn old CDs and water bottles into glow-in-the-dark mobiles and I Spy bottles.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

Have you ever wanted to build your dream city?  You bring the creative ideas and we'll provide the materials for you to construct your own mini metropolis.  Program will last about 45 - 60 minutes.

STORYTIME IN THE PARK  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

  • Tuesdays, June 6 - July 25, 10:00 a.m. at Frontier Park (Black Bob Rd. & Indian Creek Pkwy.)
  • Thursdays, June 8 - July 27, 10:00 a.m. at Mill Creek Park (Woodland & Poplar)

Bring a blanket and enjoy 30 minutes of stories, songs, and fingerplays.  Stories are geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but all are welcome.  No registration required.  In case of rain, storyime will be cancelled.  NOTE:  There will be no storytime on July 4th.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST  •  For 1st - 5th graders

  • Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Monday, May 22
  • Entry deadline is Monday, June 26
  • Winners announced by Monday, July 10
  • Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 31

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer.  Beginning May 22 entry forms will be available at both Olathe libraries and available for download here on our website.
