Our summer theme for 2015 is Every Hero Has a Story!  We will be celebrating heroes and reading all summer long
at the Olathe Public Library.  Below is a list of activities we have planned for this summer.

SUMMER READING FOLDERS

  • First day to pick up folder:  Wednesday, May 20 at the Downtown Library & Indian Creek Library
  • Return folders between July 27 - August 12

All readers, going into 5th grade and younger, are encouraged to pick up a summer reading folder at either library beginning Wednesday, May 20 or anytime thereafter.  Use the folder to record all of your summer reading.  You may keep track of your reading either by writing down the titles of the books you read or by tracking the number of days you spend time reading.  Just for fun you may also collect colorful stickers on the back of your folder each week throughout the summer.  Bring your folder back between July 27 - August 12 and receive a free paperback book.  Folders will be distributed throughout the summer at both libraries and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 27 at Frontier Park.

Summer starts off with a bang at our Summer Reading Kick-Off.  Pick up a summer reading folder and enjoy a variety of free fun activities.  Lenexa Sertoma Club will be selling food as a library fundraiser.  Olathe Noon Optimists will provide free water.  Everyone is invited to join in the fun.  Reading folders will also be available at both libraries.

Frontier Park is located at Black Bob Road and Indian Creek Parkway, just southwest of the Indian Creek Library.  In case of rain Kick-Off will be canceled.

Drop by the Friends of the Library Book Sale on the same day from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library.  Book sale continues on May 27 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. with Six-Bucks-A-Sack sale from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

BE A HERO IN YOUR COMMUNITY!  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Wednesday, July 29, 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library

Drop in anytime from 12:30 to 2:30 and be a hero in your community by participating in volunteer opportunities that are perfect for kids!  We'll make bookmarks for OPL's Library to You and crafts for Johnson County Meals on Wheels; learn Sidewalk CPR from the Olathe Fire Department; write letters to members of the U.S. military; and more.  We'll accept item donations for KidsTLC, a local program that helps kids in crisis.  (For a list of needed items, visit the KidsTLC website at http://kidstlc.org/needslist.)  The activities will be specifically geared toward kids going into 1st through 5th grades, but younger siblings with parents are welcome.

Do you have a favorite comic?  Have you ever wanted to create your own?  Join us in learning about making comics and creating your very own comic strip!  Program will last about 45 minutes.

DRUM SAFARI  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

  • Wednesday, June 10, 1:30 p.m. at the Indian Creek Community Church
    (12480 S. Black Bob Rd., just north of the Indian Creek Library)

Join us on a musical "safari" with percussion group Drum Safari.  Learn about rhythm and traditional instruments during this fun, high-energy, interactive performance.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about an hour.

EVENING STORYTIME AT THE LIBRARY  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

Come to the library and enjoy an evening of stories, fingerplays, and songs.  The stories will be geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.  No registration required.  Storytime will last about 30 minutes.  NOTE:  This program will feature the same stories used at Storytime in the Park.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS  •  For all ages  •  No registration

Oh no!  That pesky dog Fido is lost again in the Children's Department.  Stop by the Downtown Library or Indian Creek Library any Friday between May 29 and August 7 and hunt for Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children's Department.  If you can find him and tell us where he is, you will get a small prize!

FLYING DEBRIS  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

Join Richard Holmgren for feats of super juggling.  Flying Debris is the name of his act, and you will be amazed by what he can keep in the air and how he does it.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about an hour.

Join us for free family movies at the library this summer.  The same movie will be shown at both the Downtown Library and the Indian Creek Library on Mondays at 1:30 p.m.  Bring a pillow and enjoy a good movie.  No registration is necessary, but space is limited.  Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis starting 30 minutes before each show.  The whole family is welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

MEET A REAL LIFE HERO!  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Heroes don't always wear capes, and they aren't just in comics and movies.  Meet a real-life hero from our community:  a firefighter from the Olathe Fire Department!  You'll learn what a firefighter does, what equipment a firefighter uses, how to become a firefighter, fire safety tips, and more.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

MODERN POP ART EXPERIENCE  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

  • Wednesday, June 24, 6:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Library
    Registration begins Friday, June 19

New York artist and author Michael Albert will talk about his collage art and his book An Artist's America.  He will then lead you in creating a collage of your very own.  Every child attending will receive a free poster signed by the artist.  This is a family program for kids going into 1st - 5th grade and their parents.  No younger or older siblings please.  Program will last about two hours.

PARENT & CHILD LEGO® LOCK-IN  •  For 1st - 5th graders + parents •  Registration required

What will you build?  The library will provide the bricks, and you provide the imagination.  Our after-hours LEGO®
Lock-In is for kids going into 1st – 5th grade and their parents.  Yes, parents, we want you building too!  Due to choking hazards and space limitations, no younger or older siblings will be allowed.  All participants must be here by 7:00; no late arrivals will be admitted.  Once inside, participants may not leave and re-enter.  Program will last until about 8:30 p.m.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND SUPERHEROES  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

Join Mad Science of Kansas City to explore the real-life science behind superhero abilities and feats you've seen in comics, cartoons, and movies!  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about an hour.

STORYTIME IN THE PARK  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

Bring a blanket and enjoy 30 minutes of stories, songs, and fingerplays.  Stories are geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but all are welcome.  No registration required.  In case of rain, storyime will be canceled.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST  •  For 1st - 5th graders

  • Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Wednesday, May 20
  • Entry deadline is Monday, June 29
  • Winners announced Monday, July 13
  • Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 27

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer.  Entry forms will be available on May 20 and may be picked up at either library or downloaded from our website.

SUPER BUDDIES  •  For Preschoolers + an adult  •  No registration
