Our summer theme for 2014 is Fizz Boom Read!  We will be celebrating science and reading all summer long
at the Olathe Public Library.  Below is a list of activities we have planned for this summer.

SUMMER READING FOLDERS

  • First day to pick up folder:  Wednesday, May 21 at the Main Library & Indian Creek Branch
  • Return folders between July 28 - August 13

All readers, 5th grade and younger, are encouraged to pick up a summer reading folder at either library beginning Wednesday, May 21.  Use the folder to record all of your summer reading.  You may keep track of your reading either by writing down the titles of all the books you read or by keeping track of the number of days you spend time reading.  Just for fun you may also collect colorful stickers on the back of your folder each week throughout the summer.  Bring your folder back between July 28 - August 13 and receive a free paperback book.  Folders will be distributed throughout the summer at both libraries and will also be available at our Summer Reading Kick-Off on May 27 at Frontier Park.

Summer starts off with a bang at our Summer Reading Kick-Off.  Pick up a summer reading folder and enjoy a variety of games and other fun activities.  Lenexa Sertoma Club will be selling pizza, hot dogs, and soft drinks, as well as games and prizes, to raise funds for a hearing loop to be installed for the hearing impaired in the Indian Creek Branch meeting room.  Olathe Noon Optimists will provide free water.  Everyone is invited to join in the fun.  Reading folders will also be available at both libraries.

Frontier Park is located at Black Bob Road and Indian Creek Parkway, just southwest of the Indian Creek Branch Library.  In case of rain Kick-Off will be canceled.

Drop by the Friends of the Library Book Sale on the same day from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Branch.  Book sale continues on May 28 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. with Six-Bucks-A-Sack sale from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Have you ever thought about creating gum that never loses its flavor or wished for socks that would never fall down?  Do you like to build things and take them apart?  If you are a kid who like to think creatively, brainstorm or problem solve, then this program is for you!  We’ll discuss inventions made by kids, get expert advice and guidance from representatives of the Inventors Club of Kansas City, and explore the process of turning ideas into inventions.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

Building a safe, strong building or bridge isn’t as easy as you might think!  In this program, you can try your hand at building sound structures using everyday materials and basic techniques, and complete fun building challenges.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

CHILD & PARENT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP  •  For 3rd - 5th graders + an adult  •  Registration required

This program is for kids going into 3rd through 5th grades plus an adult.  It is designed to encourage children and adults to read books together.  Both child and adult should read the book and come prepared to discuss it.  Bring a pillow and relax.  Snacks will be provided.  See registration dates listed above.  You may register online, by phone, or at either library, but your copy of the discussion book must be picked up at the Indian Creek Branch.  One book per child will be provided..

EVENING STORYTIME AT THE LIBRARY  •  For 3 - 5 year olds & their families  •  No registration

Come to the library and enjoy an evening of stories, finger plays, and songs.  The stories will be geared to 3 - 5 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.  No registration required.  Storytime will last about 30 minutes.  NOTE:  This program will feature the same stories used at Storytime in the Park.

Science can be pretty gross—but also a lot of fun!  Join us for some disgusting activities, trivia, and even a “gross” snack (don’t worry, it will look gross but taste great!).  Program will last about 45 minutes.

Oh no!  That pesky dog Fido is lost again in the Children's Department.  Stop by the Main Library or Indian Creek Branch any Friday between May 30 and August 8 and hunt for Fido who will be hiding somewhere in the Children's Department.  If you can find him and tell us where he is, you will get a small prize! 
NOTE:  There will be no Find Fido on July 4.  Both libraries will be closed.

HAMSTER BALL RACES  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  Registration required

Enter your pet hamster in the library's 3rd Annual Hamster Ball Races!  Bring your pet in a plastic hamster ball, and let's see who has the fastest hamster in town!  All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Spectators welcome as space allows.

KANSAS CITY ZOO PRESENTS "FOOD CHAIN MYSTERY"  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

Join special presenters from the Kansas City Zoo as we solve the mystery of “who ate it?” by exploring the roles that make up the food chain. This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

LEGO® LOCK-IN  •  For 1st - 5th graders + parents •  Registration required

Our after-hours LEGO® Lock-In will have a collaborative theme this summer.  Together we will build a whole neighborhood made of LEGO® bricks.  The library will provide the bricks, and you provide the imagination.  This program is for kids going into 1st – 5th grade and their parents.  Yes, parents, we want you building too!  Due to choking hazards and space limitations, no younger or older siblings will be allowed.  All participants must be here by 7:00; no late arrivals will be admitted.  Once inside, participants may not leave and re-enter.  Program will last until about 8:30 p.m.

R.E.A.D. TO A DOG  •  For Young Readers of all ages  •  No registration

Robots—they’re not just in books anymore!  Come learn more about designing and building robots from the Olathe Northwest High School 1710 Robotics Team.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

SCIENCE CITY PRESENTS "VOLTS & JOLTS"  •  For 1st - 5th graders  •  No registration

Electricity is illuminated in a series of shocking experiments!  Explore electrons and protons as the Van de Graaff generator creates volts of hair-raising excitement.  Observe the Tesla Coil send arcs of electricity through the air and watch a lamp mysteriously light up.  This program is for kids going into 1st - 5th grades, but parents and siblings are also welcome.  Space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out at the door starting at 1:15 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.  Seating will be on the floor.  No chairs, food, or drinks of any kind will be allowed.  Program will last about 45 minutes.

SUMMER BOOKMARK CONTEST  •  For 1st - 5th graders

  • Entry forms available at both libraries beginning Tuesday, May 27
  • Entry deadline is Monday, June 30
  • Winners announced Monday, July 14
  • Bookmarks will be available beginning Monday, July 28

Children entering grades 1st - 5th are invited to design a bookmark for the Olathe Public Library.  Entries will be judged by grade, and prizes will be awarded.  Winning entries will be printed and distributed at both Olathe libraries at the end of the summer.  Entry forms will be available on may 27 and may be picked up at either library or downloaded from our website.
