RAISING A READER - 6 BY 6 LITERACY SKILLS - For ages 5 & younger with adult

Ready, set, grow a reader! Bring your young children to our meeting room to help grow their pre-reading skills as you interact together with educational toys and books. No registration. Come and go as you please.

Children of all ages may drop by the library and read to a cuddly canine between 1:30 and 2:30 on the dates listed above. Come to the Children's Desk upon arrival and check in for a reading time. Reading sessions are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No advanced registration necessary. For more information, call (913) 971-6874. STORY EXPLORERS - For K - 2nd graders + adult

Come play with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics)!  Children, and the adults who bring them, will explore these concepts in creative ways through engaging activities.  We will explore amazing books, watch spectacular demonstrations, sing silly songs, create works of art, and participate with exciting hands-on stations.  No registration, but space is limited.  Tickets will be handed out 15 minutes before program begins.  Program will last about an hour.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS - For all ages

Are you a kid in kindergarten through 5th grade who loves building with LEGO bricks? Be a part of our monthly Afterschool LEGO Club! Enjoy a small snack as you hear about the month's special theme.  We'll then turn you loose on the library's LEGO collection to build something awesome and let you show off your creation before you leave.  Program will last about an hour.
PARENTS: To allow as many children as possible to experience LEGO Club, please sign your child up for ONLY one LEGO Club meeting per calendar month. 

SATURDAY STORYTIME - For preschoolers & their families

Love to build with LEGO® bricks? Make something awesome using your own LEGO® (or compatible) bricks and enter it into our LEGO® Design Contest for kids in kindergarten through 5th grade.  You could win a prize! (This year there will also be categories for teens and adults.*) Full rules and more information will be available at the lbrary and on the library website beginning March 13; registration starts on March 30. Space is limited and registration is required.
NOTE:  Contest will be held off-site at the Indian Creek Community Church, 12480 S. Blackbob Road (near the Olathe Indian Creek Library).

Love storytimes AND crafts? Let's put them together to practice "6 by 6" pre-reading skills! Preschoolers aged 3 to 5 are invited to grab a grown-up and come to the library to hear a few stories and then make a craft based on the stories we heard. Stories and crafts will be specially selected to let kids practice their 6 by 6 skills and to give adults tips for reinforcing these important skills at home. Children will need some help from their adult to complete the craft. Adults may bring more than one child but will need to assist each child they bring. Program will last about 35 - 45 minutes.

DISCOVER POETRY - For K - 5th graders

Poetry! It makes us laugh. It makes us think. Join us for Discover Poetry. We will listen to poems, create a poem together, and participate in a poetry art project in honor of National Poetry Month. No registration. Program will last about an hour.

Join certified yoga instruction Jessica Sexton for an introduction to the basics of yoga—just for kids! Learn breathing techniques, basic poses, and more. No equipment needed. Wear comfortable clothing. Program will last about 45 minutes.

Join us for a free family movie at the library. The whole family is welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. All seating will be on the floor. It's acting, without the memorization—it's reader's theater! In this program kids ages 8 - 11 will take part in acting out stories by reading aloud their character's part. After we've had a chance to practice, parents and siblings will be invited in to view our performance.. Program will last about an 90 minutes.

Do you LOVE books and reading? Are you in grades 3 - 5? Join a club for kids who love reading, sharing, and learning more about books!  Each month we'll share a quick pizza dinner together, talk about books we've read (or are reading), and enjoy a surprise reading-related activity together.  Please bring a copy of a book you've enjoyed recently to the program (preferably a book the OPL owns, but it doesn't have to be) and be prepared to tell us a little bit about it—without giving away too much of the story!  Program will last about 90 minutes.
