HOMESCHOOL ART SHOW

November 1 - 30
at the Main Library

Stop by the Main Library anytime during the month of November and check out the display of artwork by local homeschoolers at OPL's 2nd Annual Homeschool Art Show.  The art will be done by homeschoolers ages 6 - 18 (grades 1st - 12th).  Everyone is also invited to attend our public "Meet the Artists" reception on November 11 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Main Library.

READ TO A DOG - For young readers of all ages

Children of all ages may drop by the library and read to a cuddly canine between 1:30 and 2:30 on the dates listed above. Come to the Children's Desk upon arrival and check in for a reading time. Reading sessions are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No advanced registration necessary. For more information, call (913) 971-6874. Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc.

FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS - For all ages

Come play chess with a worthy opponent at our Family Chess Nights. Boards and equipment will be provided. All ages and playing levels welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration.

Join us for our monthly LEGO Club for homeschoolers! Each month we'll have a new theme, and you can have fun building with bricks provided by the library. Each session will last about an hour.

RAISING A READER - 6 BY 6 LITERACY SKILLS - For ages 5 & younger with adult

Wednesdays, September 3 - November 19

Ready, set, grow a reader! Bring your young children to our meeting room to help grow their pre-reading skills as you interact together with educational toys and books. No registration. Come and go as you please.

"CRAFTING" OUR 6 BY 6 SKILLS - For ages 3 - 5 with adult

Monday, Novenber 10   *Registration begins Monday, October 6
9:30 a.m. at the Main Library

Love storytimes AND crafts? Let's put them together to practice "6 by 6" pre-reading skills! Preschoolers aged 3 to 5 are invited to grab a grown-up and come to the library to hear a few stories and then make a craft based on the stories we heard. Stories and crafts will be specially selected to let kids practice their 6 by 6 skills and to give adults tips for reinforcing these important skills at home. Children will need some help from their adult to complete the craft. Adults may bring more than one child but will need to assist each child they bring. Program will last about 35 - 45 minutes.

"MEET THE ARTISTS" RECEPTION - For all ages

Are you a kid in kindergarten through 5th grade who loves building with LEGO bricks? Be a part of our monthly Afterschool LEGO Club! Enjoy a small snack as you hear about the month's special theme.  We'll then turn you loose on the library's LEGO collection to build something awesome and let you show off your creation before you leave.  Program will last about an hour.
PARENTS: To allow as many children as possible to experience LEGO Club, please sign your child up for ONLY one LEGO Club meeting per calendar month.

PIZZA & PAGES BOOK LOVERS CLUB - For 3rd - 5th graders

6:00 p.m. at the Main Library

Do you LOVE books and reading? Are you in grades 3 - 5? Help us start a brand-new club for kids who love reading, sharing and learning more about books! Each month we'll eat a quick pizza dinner together and talk about books we've enjoyed recently. What else will we do? It's up to you! We could create tools to help other kids find great books, write to favorite authors, watch book trailers—the possibilities are endless.  Please bring a copy of a book you've enjoyed recently to the program (preferably a book the OPL owns, but it doesn't have to be) and be prepared to tell us a little bit about it—without giving away too much of the story! Program will last about 90 minutes.

TABLETOP GAME DAY! - For ages 8 & up

Saturday, November 15
12:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Indian Creek Branch

Be a part of our International Games Day celebration and learn a new tabletop board, dice or card game! We'll show you how to play popular "designer" games such as Ticket to Ride and Fluxx, and give you a chance to try them out. Already a fan of tabletop games? Great! Bring your own games and play with other enthusiasts. Kids ages 8 and up (preferably with a parent), teens and adults are all welcome to drop in anytime from noon to 4:00 p.m.  No registration.
PLEASE NOTE:  Due to choking hazards and to the complexity of the these games, this program is not recommended for kids under age 8.

KANSAS READS TO PRESCHOOLERS CRAFT - For preschoolers + adult

Bring your preschooler and celebrate Kansas Reads to Preschoolers by making a craft based upon the book Is Everyone Ready for Fun? by Jan Thomas. Come and go as you please.  No registration.

Drop by the Storytime Room and have some fun with our DUPLO collection! DUPLO bricks will be made available after our 10:15 Saturday Storytime ends. Parents must remain with their children. No registration.
