MAKE A MEMORY BOX - For K - 5th graders

7:00 - 7:45 p.m. at the Indian Creek Branch

Drop in to create a personalized memory box perfect for storing your small treasures and mementos, and learn about the Santa Fe Trail. Program is inspired by the American Girl character Josefina and presented in conjunction with Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. No registration, but supplies are limited.  Come and go as you please.

READ TO A DOG - For young readers of all ages

Children of all ages may drop by the library and read to a cuddly canine between 1:30 and 2:30 on the dates listed above. Come to the Children's Desk upon arrival and check in for a reading time. Reading sessions are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No advanced registration necessary. For more information, call (913) 971-6874. FAMILY CHESS NIGHTS - For all ages

Come play chess with a worthy opponent at our Family Chess Nights. Boards and equipment will be provided. All ages and playing levels welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration.

Join us for our monthly LEGO Club for homeschoolers! Each month we'll have a new theme, and you can have fun building with bricks provided by the library. Each session will last about an hour. 

RAISING A READER - 6 BY 6 LITERACY SKILLS - For ages 5 & younger with adult

Ready, set, grow a reader! Bring your young children to our meeting room to help grow their pre-reading skills as you interact together with educational toys and books. No registration. Come and go as you please.

Are you a kid in kindergarten through 5th grade who loves building with LEGO bricks? Be a part of our monthly Afterschool LEGO Club! Enjoy a small snack as you hear about the month's special theme.  We'll then turn you loose on the library's LEGO collection to build something awesome and let you show off your creation before you leave.  Program will last about an hour.
PARENTS: To allow as many children as possible to experience LEGO Club, please sign your child up for ONLY one LEGO Club meeting per calendar month.

PIZZA & PAGES BOOK LOVERS CLUB - For 3rd - 5th graders

Do you LOVE books and reading? Are you in grades 3 - 5? Help us start a brand-new club for kids who love reading, sharing and learning more about books! Each month we'll eat a quick pizza dinner together and talk about books we've enjoyed recently. What else will we do? It's up to you! We could create tools to help other kids find great books, write to favorite authors, watch book trailers—the possibilities are endless.  Please bring a copy of a book you've enjoyed recently to the program (preferably a book the OPL owns, but it doesn't have to be) and be prepared to tell us a little bit about it—without giving away too much of the story! Program will last about 90 minutes.

FREE FAMILY MOVIE - For all ages

Join us for a free family movie at the library. The whole family is welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. All seating will be on the floor. Feel free to bring a pillow or blanket. No registration but space is limited.

STAR WARS READS DAY 2014 - For all ages

Star Wars fans of all ages are invited to celebrate Star Wars Reads Day. Drop in anytime from 10:00 a.m. to noon for activities and displays throughout the Main Library that celebrate Star Wars and reading. Costumes are encouraged! A full schedule of activities will be available in the library and on the library's website by September 15.  No registration.

"CRAFTING" OUR 6 BY 6 SKILLS - For ages 3 - 5 with adult

Love storytimes AND crafts? Let's put them together to practice "6 by 6" pre-reading skills! Preschoolers aged 3 to 5 are invited to grab a grown-up and come to the library to hear a few stories and then make a craft based on the stories we heard. Stories and crafts will be specially selected to let kids practice their 6 by 6 skills and to give adults tips for reinforcing these important skills at home. Children will need some help from their adult to complete the craft. Adults may bring more than one child but will need to assist each child they bring. Program will last about 35 - 45 minutes.

BRICK-TIONARY - For K - 5th graders

What is Brick-tionary? Think Pictionary but with LEGO building instead of drawing. Bring your best brick-building skills and guessing abilities for a fun time. Program will last about an hour.

HOMESCHOOL ART SHOW DROP-OFF - For ages 6 - 18 (grades 1st - 12th)

Homeschool artists: Show us your bestenter your creative masterpiece in OPL's 2nd Annual Homeschool Art Show! Homeschoolers ages 6 to 18 (grades 1st - 12th) are invited to submit one piece of 2-D art to display at the Main Library and to attend our public "Meet the Artists" reception with your friends and family on November 11. Drop off artwork and completed Artist Information Form at the Main Library Children's Desk between October 18 - 26.

PUZZLERS' DELIGHT - For 1st - 5th graders

No school—what to do? How about a mystery and a puzzle at the library? Team up to complete a jigsaw puzzle or try your hand at PhotoPlay (completing a captioned photograph with your illustration). The story will be suitably haunting—Halloween is around the corner. Program will last about an hour.

LET'S CELEBRATE THE DAY OF THE DEAD - For 5th grade & younger + adult

Come celebrate the Day of the Dead. Children in 5th grade and younger, along with parents, can drop by and decorate a traditional sugar skull. Come and go as you please. No registration but supplies are limited.
