READ TO A DOG - For young readers of all ages

Children of all ages may drop by the library and read to a cuddly canine between 1:30 and 2:30 on the dates listed above. Come to the Children's Desk upon arrival and check in for a reading time. Reading sessions are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No advanced registration necessary. For more information, call (913) 971-6874. Trained therapy dogs provided by Pets for Life, Inc.

"CRAFTING" OUR 6 BY 6 SKILLS - For ages 3 - 5 + adult

Love storytimes AND crafts? Let's put them together to practice "6 by 6" pre-reading skills! Children are invited to grab a grown-up and come to the library to hear a few stories and then make a craft based on the stories. Stories and crafts will be specially selected to let kids practice their 6 by 6 skills and to give adults tips for reinforcing these important skills at home. Adults may bring more than one child but will need to assist each child they bring. Program will last about 35 - 45 minutes.

Come play chess with a worthy opponent at our Family Chess Nights. Boards and equipment will be provided. All ages and playing levels welcome, but kindergartners and younger must be accompanied by an adult. No registration.

Music with Mar is an interactive program of music and movement, including rhythm, story, puppets, and a little sign language. Adults must attend with their preschoolers. Program will last about 45 minutes.

RAISING A READER - 6 BY 6 LITERACY SKILLS - For ages 5 & younger + adult

Ready, set, grow a reader! Bring your young children to our meeting room to help grow their "pre-reading" skills as you interact together with educational toys and activity centers. Come and go as you please. No registration.

Join us for our monthly LEGO Club for homeschoolers! Each month we'll have a new theme, and you can have fun building with bricks provided by the library. Each session will last about an hour.

Are you a kid in kindergarten through 5th grade who loves building with LEGO bricks? Be a part of our monthly LEGO Club! Each month we'll introduce a different theme, turn you loose on the library's LEGO collection to build something awesome, then let you show off your creation before you leave. (The Wednesday afternoon LEGO Club will offer a small snack; the Tuesday evening LEGO Club will not.)
PARENTS: To allow as many children as possible to experience LEGO Club, please sign your child up for ONLY one LEGO Club meeting per calendar month.

SNAKES ALIVE - For 1st - 5th graders

Staff from Ernie Miller Nature Center will be joining us for this special presentation, which will include a visit from several live Kansas snakes! We will use observation and scientific inquiry to debunk common myths and fears about snakes. Discussion about snakes will include physical traits, size ranges, reproduction, adaptive coloration, sorting by predation type, and safety. Program will last about 45 minutes. NOTE: This is a repeat of the program held for homeschoolers on January 15.

VALENTINE'S DAY STORYTIME - For ages 3 - 6

Today is Valentine's Day! Come and listen to some sweet Valentine's Day stories and rhymes and creat a special Valentine's Day craft.  Program will last about an hour.  No registration.  Sponsored by the Teen Library Club (TLC) of the Olathe Public Library.

UNUSUAL ANIMAL FRIENDSHIPS - For K - 5th graders

Do you love animals? Come listen to some true stories of unusual animal friends, like Tarra the dog and Bella the elephant or Owen the hippo and Mzee the tortoise. Program will last about 45 minutes.

Come spend a fun afternoon with Olathe teens at Family Library Day! We will be doing fun activities promoting reading, recycling, healthy eating, and more. Come and go as you please. Sponsored by the Olathe Teen Council and the Teen Library Club (TLC) of the Olathe Public Library. No registration.

HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM: GET YOUR "ACT" TOGETHER! - For ages 8 - 11

It's acting without the memorization—it's reader's theater! In this program kids ages 8 to 11 will take part in acting out stories by reading aloud their character's part. After we've had a chance to practice, parents and siblings will be invited to view our performance. Program will last about an hour.

PHONICS PRACTICE - VOWEL SOUNDS - For ages 4 - 7

Could your child benefit from some extra practice with learning vowel sounds? Your beginning readers will learn short and long vowel sounds through songs, crafts, and simple worksheets. Program will last about 30 minutes. Registration is for both sessions.
