Library Policies: Collection Development Policy Summary
Olathe Public Library’s Collection Development Policy serves as a guide to selecting a variety of materials for our customers. As a public library, all age groups are considered in regards to their informational, educational and recreational needs. The Collection Development Policy also outlines the many types of materials for each age group. Books, newspapers, magazines, documents, microfilm, videocassettes, DVDs, audiocassettes, books on CD, music on CD and electronic databases comprise the library’s current range of media. Parameters for selection within each media are stated in the policy as well as criteria for retention. Librarians consult numerous critical reviews from professional sources when compiling orders for new materials. Each librarian is a specialist for an area of the collection overseeing both additions and deletions.
Standing behind the acquisition of any item is the library’s philosophy of free access to a variety of materials and views contained in the many formats. At the same time the Olathe Public Library strives to house materials that are appropriate for the community and its residents. Customers can review the collection development policy available at both the main library and the branch.
